The Emergency Preparedness Committee (EPC) is a volunteer group of residents whose main purpose is to facilitate resident self-preparation and to utilize available EPC resources to benefit the community when an emergency occurs.
EPC has divided The Villages into 25 sectors, each with an Aid Station filled with emergency supplies, necessary tools, and information to get help. Each sector has volunteer Sector Chiefs and Area Reps whose main duty is to report the status of each residence so assistance can be rendered, if necessary. During a disaster, volunteers activate the Villages Emergency Operations Center with an Incident Commander, multiple Specialty Teams, including Medical, Emotional Support, Engineering, Security, Communications and more.
EPC welcomes all our Village residents with or without experience. We need a large team of volunteers to be trained and prepared to help during an emergency. It’s not a matter of ‘if’ a disaster will strike, but ‘when’. EPC’s ability to respond following a disaster may be very limited in the first 72 hours following an event. Our mission is to prepare our residents with ongoing training and organize an effective response.
There are no educational requirements to join EPC as a volunteer, but it is worthwhile to take advantage of all training opportunities when they are available, such as CPR/AED training. Also watch for future notices for opportunities to attend Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training classes usually offered once or twice a year.
The Emergency Preparedness Committee's (EPC) purpose is to prepare Villagers to respond to emergencies, and give direction and assistance to residents and guests during emergencies, in accordance with The Villages Emergency Preparedness Plan. The Committee shall also assist The Villages management in responding to extraordinary emergencies that may occur in the community.
1. To develop and implement The Villages Emergency Plan in coordination with Public Safety.
2. To hold emergency informational meetings and to carry out emergency planning drills.
3. To keep the Board of Directors informed of its activities, including submittal of an annual report at the end of the calendar year.
4. To develop an annual budget to support the Committee's emergency planning and programs.
5. To coordinate, train, support a network of resident volunteers to assist with its preparedness activities and response during an emergency.
6. To promote emergency preparedness and awareness through articles in The Villager, notices on the community television stations, Fast Lane, Mailings, Emergency Drills and other presentations.
After our annual Disaster Drill, we gather to discuss how effectively we performed.
